The Importance of Breakfast

Mornings are hectic and we are always in a rush so it is easy for us to let breakfast slip our minds. Hitting that snooze button for the third time and opting to spend those extra few minutes in bed always seems that little bit more appealing. Taking the time to eat something in the morning to break that fast after we sleep is very important. We need to refuel our bodies and brains with much needed energy and nutrients, to get us ready for the day ahead. By skipping breakfast, you are essentially running on empty and your body will not be able to function properly.

"You want to aim for a breakfast that combines good carbs and fibre with some protein." - Erica Giovinazzo, Nutritionist at Clay Health Club and Spa, in New York City.

Getting into the science of it all, our bodies need fuel in the morning to restore glucose levels, an essential carbohydrate that is needed for the brain to function. This helps improve your concentration levels and productivity throughout the entire day. Consuming a meal in the morning will kick start your metabolism which in turn helps you to burn more calories throughout the day. This does not mean a muffin and a coffee on the go. A good nutritious meal will keep you satisfied for longer and curb your appetite so that you do not reach for something easy and less healthy out of pure hunger.

Imagine trying to drive a car with no fuel – it’s not going to happen or at least you’re not going to get very far. So why do the same to your body?

Plan ahead and keep it simple and easy. There are a lot of nutritious and delicious breakfast recipes that can be prepped the night before which you can read about in our next blog Our Top 5 Nutritious and Delicious Breakfast Recipes to make it more convenient for you. It is all about habit and making the right choices that is best for you.

"Breakfast is like exercising, if you make room for it in the morning, you'll look and feel great throughout the day." - Tangney, Clinical Dietitian at Rush University Medical Center
